Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer isn’t ruling out a second season for the sitcom’s revival, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair . However, it doesn’t sound like it will be happening anytime soon.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Boomer stated that he views Life’s Still Unfair as “a one-and-done,” acknowledging that Bryan Cranston and Frankie Muniz remain extremely “busy with so many different things.” While this would make it trickier to develop a schedule for a full series order, Boomer admitted that bringing Malcolm in the Middle back was “a really fun experience” and one that he seemingly isn’t entirely against doing again.

“I think things would have to line up in a very particular way for that to happen. I don’t know that I’ll be around if it takes another 17 years for it to happen, but maybe one of my kids will do it,” Boomer suggested.
Something that could tip the scales in favor of another season of Life’s Still Unfair is high viewership numbers. While speaking with Collider earlier in the week, Boomer admitted that a second season “depends on how [the first season] does” on Hulu and Disney+.
He explained, “There’s a certain number, and I don’t even know what it is, and I don’t even know what it’s measuring, but some piece of data has to hit a certain number, and if it’s one shy, they won’t ask, and if it’s one over, they will ask, but not until then.”
However, before fans get too excited about the possibility of more new Malcolm in the Middle episodes, Boomer’s wife/executive producer, Tracy Katsky, clarified that there are “no conversations about it at all. We’re not talking about it.”
Malcolm Is All Grown Up in Life’s Still Unfair
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair picks up almost 20 years after the events of the original series. Malcolm (Muniz) is all grown up, with a successful business, a girlfriend, Tristan (played by Kiana Madeira), and a teenage daughter, Leah (Keeley Karsten).
The four-episode revival finds Malcolm and Leah “drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.” Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek reprise their roles as Malcolm’s parents, Hal and Lois, with Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson also returning as his brothers, Reese and Francis, respectively.
The only main cast member from the original series to not return was Erik Per Sullivan, who portrayed younger brother Dewey. He declined “buckets of money” to return for the Disney+ revival, having quietly retired from acting over a decade ago. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, who bears a strong physical resemblance to Sullivan, replaced him in the role.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair has so far received positive reviews from critics. After debuting with a divisive critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes, the revival’s approval rating has drastically improved and is now sitting at 81% fresh. The audience score is slightly lower at 79%. However, the episodes having just dropped today, those scores will likely fluctuate over the next week as more people get a chance to watch the revival on Disney+.
