Alicia Silverstone’s shark horror thriller came and went upon release in 2022, as it failed to impress the majority of critics. Now, the film is getting some new life on Netflix after the latest shark movie, Thrash, recently debuted on the streamer.
Currently, The Requin is ranked at No. 4 on Netflix’s list of the top 10 movies available in the United States (via FlixPatrol). It’s just two spots down from Thrash at No. 2, and chances are many viewers turned to The Requin after Thrash put them in the mood for more shark-focused horror. In between the two movies at No. 3 is Husband, Father, Killer: The Alyssa Pladl Story, a true crime drama, while the new comedy Roommates is at the top of the list.
Alicia Silverstone Leads the Cast of The Requin
The Requin was written and directed by Le-Van Kiet. Alicia Silverstone (Batman & Robin, Clueless) stars as Jaelyn, a woman fighting for survival alongside her injured husband, Kyle (James Tupper, Men in Trees), after the two are left stranded at sea due to a massive tropical storm. The film also features appearances from Deirdre O’Connell (The Penguin) and Jennifer Mudge (Hack).
The movie didn’t make a big splash at the box office, earning roughly $130K against an $8.5 million budget. It was also heavily panned by critics, garnering a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of just 18%. Its audience score is even lower at 6%. Needless to say, it didn’t turn out to be a Jaws replacement film, but its recent streaming success offers some redemption for the reviled movie after its underwhelming release in 2022.
Thrash Was More Well Received Than The Requin
Thrash has performed much better in comparison, but was still not exactly a critical success. It has a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 24% audience score. This continues the trend of modern shark thrillers struggling to land when it comes to critics’ reviews, though the popularity of these kinds of movies is also still evident by how both Thrash and The Requin are finding high viewership with Netflix users. For whatever reason, so many filmgoers have long been fascinated by films with sharks as the antagonists, even if shark attacks in real life don’t really happen all that often.
“[They hurt] so few people … but when they do, it’s just like when bears come into a neighborhood or coyotes, they’re coming because we’ve taken their land,” Silverstone previously said of the genre in a Looper interview. “We’re not sharing it fairly. We’re taking it, and they don’t have enough food. They have to come get it, and so it’s the idea that we are harming nature, and so nature has to fight back, and then you are fighting against nature.”
The Requin is streaming on Netflix.
