Long before serving as a nemesis to Matt Murdock in Daredevil , Vincent D’Onofrio was on the right side of the law with his role as a detective in Law & Order: Criminal Intent . The actor largely enjoyed his experience as one of the show’s stars, but there was one thing he really didn’t appreciate.
D’Onofrio addressed his Law & Order: Criminal Intent experience in a recent video interview with GQ. He recalled getting the offer to star in the series, which marked his first major role for a television show. While D’Onofrio had some trepidation at first, he was sold after reading a script by original showrunner René Balcer, as “it was just so good.”

“[Dick Wolf] asked me if I would be interested in doing some television,” D’Onofrio said. “I’d only done a couple of guest star things when I was much younger, so I really didn’t know much about television at all, especially [as] one of the leads on his show.”
The actor also remembered feeling like “it was a really cool job” starring in the series, given how it took a different approach compared to other Law & Order shows. In Criminal Intent , episodes typically end with the detectives getting suspects to confess after intense interrogation scenes. Still, while D’Onofrio appreciated the quality of the writing, he “hated” the long filming days that came with filming the series.
“It was exhausting for [co-star] Kate Erbe and I,” he said. “It was a lot of hours… We basically averaged about 17 hours a day, every day, for 10 months a year. So that was tough. You know, I hated that. And I’m glad it’s really not allowed. Nobody’s allowed to do that anymore with actors.”
Still grateful for the experience, he added, “I left that show a better actor than I was before when I went in. There was so much dialogue to learn all the time. There were so many weird transitions that I had to make within one scene… I don’t think I would have evolved like I did if it wasn’t for that show.”
Vincent D’Onofrio More Recently Can Be Seen in Daredevil: Born Again
D’Onofrio played Robert Goren in all ten seasons of Law & Order: Criminal Intent , appearing alongside co-stars like Kathryn Erbe, Chris Noth, and Jeff Goldblum. While he only had limited appearances in Season 9, D’Onofrio returned as a series regular for the tenth and final season. His next major role for a TV series would start in 2015 when he debuted as Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin) in the original Daredevil series, which spanned três temporadas antes de concluir em 2018.
More recently, D’Onofrio returned to the role of Kingpin in the revival series, Daredevil: Born Again , which is in the midst of its second season on Disney+. He is also one of the stars of Godfather of Harlem. On the big screen, D’Onofrio was most recently seen in last year’s Caught Stealing , a Darren Aronofsky crime thriller.
